The Tarot of Curious Creatures
The Tarot of Curious Creatures is a whimsical deck crafted by the talented Chris-Anne, known for her enchanting creations, such as The Light Seer’s Tarot and The Muse Tarot.
This unusual deck takes us on a playful journey through the major and minor arcana, blending a colorful world of fantasy and curious creatures with the insightful wisdom of Tarot. If you are looking for a classic deck, and wish to explore Tarot in a serious way, this is not the deck you are looking for. However, if you crave a lighter take on the RWS and enjoy a more playful approach to your readings. This may be the perfect deck for you. The Fool card has 2 versions, this playful pup, and one other that I will leave as a surprise in case you buy the deck:)
Each card is a celebration of imagination, featuring a medley of charming animals and quirky characters that represent the rich symbolism of traditional Tarot. The creatures leap, dance, and twirl, inviting you to tap into your playful side and approach readings with a sense of wonder and joy. Whether it’s a wise owl sharing secrets, a mischievous fox challenging your thoughts, or a gentle deer guiding you toward peace, each card beckons you to explore the depths of your intuition and creativity.
The guidebook explains the Rider Waite based meaning for each card in Chris-Ann’s usual style, with heads used to refer to the upright meaning and tails for reversed.
“Everywhere I look, an unexpected miracle reveals itself to me. The world is a magickal place, and when you fish for gold, you will find it...”
The symbolism is carried over as well, although some things are flipped on their heads. In the Page of Cups we have a fish, holding a person in a cup.
The Major Arcana in The Tarot of Curious Creatures.
In the whimsical world of The Tarot of Curious Creatures, the Major Arcana comes alive with enchanting animal personalities and vibrant stories. These are some of my favorites. The camel for the chariot is so cute, and such a great symbolic reference. The Devil is personified by a goat, with a man and woman trapped in cages.
Each card embodies a fantastical & mystical animal-headed creature. The cards are decorated with vibrant colors and symbols in what could be described as some kind of fever-dream landscape. Some of the choices are perfect for their roles, such as the Lovers love birds and vulture for Death, and some are odd, yet fitting, such as a lamb for Strength, explained as a pure and quiet, inner strength.
The Minor Arcana are all represented as well, embodying the basic ideas you would expect from a Rider Waite Smith based deck.
