Tarot Significator
The Significator in Tarot is a card that represents the querant. You can choose your own Significator or the reader can choose one for you. This card is usually a court card, but a major arcana may be chosen if preferred.
The Tarot Significator serves as a mirror reflecting the querent's essence, desires, and current life situation. It can be intentionally chosen by you or selected by the reader based on the energy they pick up during the reading. It's often a court card—like the King, Queen, Knight, or Page—that embodies traits such as courage, wisdom, or youthfulness. However, a Major Arcana card may also be fitting, especially if you feel a strong connection with concepts like The Empress, The High Priestess or The Hierophant.
A Significator is most commonly used in the Celtic Cross Tarot reading and was written about in “The Pictorial Key to the Tarot” by A. E. Waite.
The Diviner first selects a card to represent the person or, matter about which inquiry is made. This card is called the Significator. Should he wish to ascertain something in connexion with himself he takes the one which corresponds to his personal description. A Knight should be chosen as the Significator if the subject of inquiry is a man of forty years old and upward; a King should be chosen for any male who is under that age a Queen for a woman who is over forty years and a Page for any female of less age.
Choosing a Significator can deepen your connection to the reading and to Tarot in general. If you prefer a court card, think about the characteristics that resonate with you: Are you channeling the nurturing spirit of the Queen of Cups, or perhaps the assertive energy of the Knight of Swords? Alternatively, if a Major Arcana feels more aligned with your journey, select a card that embodies the transformation or lessons you're currently experiencing.
You may have more than one which you prefer, depending on your mood, the particular reading, or card deck you are using.
Whether through your intuition or the reader’s insight, the Significator will help anchor your reading, providing a focused lens through which to interpret the rest of the cards. Embrace the playful exploration of your persona as you embark on this Tarot adventure!
