If you are just starting out reading Tarot and would like to find a deck to use, or you are like me and just love discovering & adding beautiful new tarot decks to your collection. I’ve compiled some suggestions for Rider Waite inspired tarot decks that are easy to read for beginners. I’ve included reviews of my personal favorite, beginner Tarot decks to try. Enjoy!
First thing to consider is the type of deck you want. I will be heavily focusing this list on Rider Waite tarot, because it’s kind of universal, once you understand the Rider Waite, you will be able to read any Tarot deck easily.
Best Rider Waite inspired tarot decks for beginners
The Radiant Wise Spirit Tarot
I Love This Deck! If I could only have one Tarot deck, this is it for sure. Radiant Wise Spirit Tarot by Lo Scarabeo is a RWS Tarot Deck but the artwork has been updated with a fresh new color scheme. The original version of the cards tend to be a bit garish, here the colors have been muted and toned down. Gradients have been added which give the images a bit of added depth.
The overall result is a classic card deck that is very pleasing to look at. I like the border-less version best. The deck has received a bit of criticism for modifying the original art, but I don’t mind. I love the original tarot deck, but the colors in the original printing were limited by the printing technology of the day. I bet if Pamela Smith were here, she would approve of this one too!
Gorgeous Colors!
These are simply beautiful cards. The colors are so vibrant it’s gorgeous!
Classic Rider Waite Tarot based on the drawings by Pamela Smith
Great little guidebook included. Simple, easy to understand meanings for each card, including reversals.
Meanings in English, Italian, Spanish, French and Portuguese.
Lovely, high quality, easy to open box.
Available in 2 sizes - standard or pocket size.
Radiant Wise Spirit - My Favorite ♡
Everything is packed snug in one lovely, sturdy box which is a bit different than most - opens on top, instead of sideways like most. Making it very easy to open. Cards, and guidebook are very high quality, feels nice and smooth to handle.
Radiant Wise Spirit by Lo Scarabeo, published by Llewellyn Publications
The Guided Tarot Box Set by Stefanie Caponi - Best Guidebook
The best feature of this set is the guidebook. Its not just a book of card meanings, but a guide to learning how to read and understand the cards. It’s everything you need to learn Tarot in one simple, contained box. I highly recommend this is you want to start doing readings quickly.
Pros:
Everything you need in one inexpensive box
Includes the highly rated book with a basic tarot deck.
Take a look inside the book here>
The Weiser Tarot - A New & Lovely Watercolor version of the Tarot.
A brand new version of the Rider Waite to check out. Published in fall of 2022.
Pros:
Classic Rider Waite Tarot with fresh new colors
More diverse characters than the original RWS.
Great guidebook! Includes meanings, some history, how to read tarot and different spreads to use.
The cards have a matte finish that feels really nice.
The suits are each colored in a palette that makes them easy identify for beginners. Purple Swords, Green Pentacles, Orange Wands Blue Cups.
Cons:
The colors can be a bit too much. Especially the purple and green.
Overall this is a lovely deck. One that I am very happy to add to my collection.
It’s a great choice for anyone wanting a Rider Waite Smith card deck with a softer, pastel color palette rather than the bold primary colors on the original.
The Original Rider Waite Tarot Pack. Channel Pamela’s spirit with this one.
This is a classic. A simple re-printing of the Original Rider Waite Tarot that was drawn by Pamela Coleman Smith in 1909, which includes The Key to the Tarot by A.E.Waite. Vintage Tarot.
Pros:
It’s the original, unadulterated Rider Waite Deck and guidebook, just as A.E. Waite and Pamela Smith intended it.
The classic turquoise card back pattern is so classic and lovely.
The cards have a great high quality finish & surface. They are not too stiff, but easy to handle and to shuffle.
Like taking a little time machine back to when the cards were made, it’s easy to get into the feeling of these cards.
High quality storage box for the cards and book.
Cons:
I was a bit disappointed by the tiny size of the guidebook. It is cute, but because this is labelled as a “Tarot Pack” I was expecting a full sized book.
The illustrations are a bit blotchy because they are reproductions of the antique cards, made with old, outdated printing techniques.
The meanings in the guidebook are a bit strange and difficult to interpret in an actual reading, it’s valuable more for historical purposes and building your own interpretations than for use in readings.
Overall impression: I’m really glad i bought this one, despite the small guidebook. I love having a physical copy of “The Key to The Tarot” for reference. These cards are Vintage Tarot at it’s best! Like a step back in time.
Hmm… a fylfot? What does this mean, exactly?
Not the best choice if you want a guidebook that will just tell you outright what the card is saying.
The Rider Tarot Deck - Classic. What else can I say?
The Rider Tarot Deck is another great choice.
Pros:
It is the officially authorized edition of the Rider Tarot by US Games Systems.
Loved by many as the best and only true Tarot deck.
Crisp, clear images.
Lovely smooth, varnished card surface.
Cons:
I personally don’t love the gingham card back design. But if you do, then this is a great choice.
The fold top paper box. I prefer my Tarot cards to come with a higher quality storage box.
The Original Rider Waite Tarot Deck by US Games Systems
The Light Seer’s Tarot by Chris Anne - A Modern Classic
Not the Rider Waite Illustrations by Pamela Coleman Smith, but still using the same titles. This deck is a new classic for the 21st Century.
Pros:
The amazing original Illustrations are definitely the highlight of this deck.
Classic Rider Waite Tarot titles are great for learning Tarot Meanings
Wonderful guidebook that sticks closely to the Original meanings, but with Chris Anne’s personal spin - Light and Dark for each card.
Thick, sturdy, high quality card stock. (are a bit hard to shuffle)
Cons:
The very positive and youthful imagery may be a bit much for some people, if you like things that are a bit more on the darker side.
Overall impression - This is a great Tarot deck with appeal for a more youthful audience who are wanting the traditional tarot, but wrapped in a more contemporary look than the dated ink drawings of the RWS.
Gold Tarot Cards with Meanings - Really Beautiful, but with an odd smell.
These cards have the meanings printed directly on them so you don’t need to refer to the book, and they are gold, how lovely!
Pros:
Rider Waite Tarot with meanings printed on them are great for learning how to read tarot.
The gold foil color is really beautiful! and so are the glossy, jewel toned illustrations.
These cards are made of PVC plastic which is super tough and even waterproof! So they will last a long time and won’t get frayed edges like paper cards inevitably do.
They come in a lovely foil gift box with a magnet closure, include a basic paper guidebook, and also (sometimes) come with surprise extras, like a little metal pendant.
Cons:
The guidebook is very basic and not the best.
The gold foil PVC cards are manufactured in china and have a slight plastic, chemical smell to them. This can be remedied somewhat by airing out the cards, or cleansing them with incense or scented oils.
The Awaken Tarot Deck
This is a brand new modern deck, very similar in style to the Modern Witch Tarot.
Pros:
Fresh new imagery, but closely follows the Rider Waite, so great for a beginner just learning the Tarot meanings
Nice little guidebook. The meanings provided are simple and concise, with a positive feeling.
Lovely gold foil detailing on each card
Comes in a sturdy box with magnetic closure
Cons:
Cards are a bit thinner and lighter than some other decks (but also easier to shuffle)
